A POS keyboard swaps a typist's layout for programmable keys that fire sale functions. Many have relegendable keys, where a paper insert shows what each key does, such as a department, quantity or void. Key counts range from about 78 on compact models to well over 100 on full-size ones. Some add a three-track magnetic stripe reader along the top, which saves a USB port for loyalty or ID cards, and some add a touchpad so a separate mouse is not needed.
Most connect by USB, and some offer PS/2 for older terminals or a combined interface. Spill and dust protection is rated by IP codes: IP54 means limited dust entry and splash resistance, helpful on busy counters. Programmable keys need a configuration tool from the maker, and your POS software must read the codes the keys send. A cable of about 6 feet is typical, so check the distance to the terminal.
