What the conversion actually changes

The adapter samples the incoming analogue signal at 10 bits and up to 162 Msps, then applies black and white level expansion, colour transition improvement, dynamic range expansion and blue stretch. It auto-detects PAL, NTSC 3.58, NTSC 4.43, SECAM, PAL/M and PAL/N formats and scales the result to either 720p or 1080p output. The processing is handled entirely inside the converter so the source device needs no configuration.

Limits of the composite-to-HDMI path

Composite video carries only standard-definition information, so the 1080p output is an upscale rather than a true high-definition source. The converter supports HDCP protocol on the HDMI output but cannot add detail that was never recorded on the original tape or disc. Buyers who need capture of higher-resolution analogue formats such as component or RGB will require a different class of device.
