Desktop for home office and study

The Dell OptiPlex 990 Mini Tower ships new with an Intel Core i7-2600 quad-core processor running at 3.40 GHz with a 3.90 GHz turbo boost. It includes 16 GB of DDR3 memory, a 128 GB solid-state drive, a 2 TB hard drive, a DVD-RW drive and Windows 10 Pro 64-bit. A USB keyboard and mouse are supplied in the box.

DDR3 memory and 265 W power limit

The system uses 240-pin DDR3 DIMM modules and the 265 W power supply restricts the graphics cards and additional drives that can be added. Integrated Intel HD Graphics 2000 drives the display outputs without a discrete card. Gigabit Ethernet provides the wired network connection.

Mini-tower access with proprietary constraints

The chassis opens for drive and memory upgrades but uses Dell-specific front-panel connectors and a non-standard power supply shape. The 2.5-inch SSD and 3.5-inch hard drive bays are fixed in place. Installing a low-profile graphics card requires checking the physical clearance and the 265 W budget.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 128 GB SSD plus 2 TB HDD or a larger solid-state option?

The 128 GB SSD holds the operating system and key programmes for fast boot times, while the 2 TB hard drive provides ample space for large files and backups. Larger solid-state options such as 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB replace the 128 GB drive if you prefer more flash storage and less mechanical storage.

What does the i7-2600 3.40 GHz processor with 3.90 GHz turbo deliver in daily use?

The quad-core Intel i7-2600 runs at 3.40 GHz base frequency and can reach 3.90 GHz on demanding single-thread tasks, giving responsive performance for office suites, web browsing and light content creation with the installed 16 GB DDR3 memory.

How does the Gigabit Ethernet port limit real-world network speed?

The integrated Gigabit Ethernet caps wired throughput at 1 Gbps, so file transfers and internet access cannot exceed that rate even if your router or switch supports faster standards.
