Workstation 2-in-1 convertible

The DELL Precision 5530 is a 15.6-inch convertible workstation finished in silver. It runs Windows 10 Pro on an 8th Generation Intel Core i7-8706G processor with four cores and eight threads. Integrated AMD Radeon Pro WX Vega M GL graphics with 4 GB GDDR5 memory handle visual workloads. The 16 GB DDR4 memory and 1 TB NVMe SSD are soldered and non-upgradable.

Sustained load behaviour

The 65-watt AC adapter powers the CPU base frequency of 3.10 GHz and a maximum turbo of 4.10 GHz under load. Quad-core architecture and dedicated GPU share the thermal envelope during extended rendering or compute tasks. Thunderbolt 3 ports support external displays or storage while the system maintains performance. No user-accessible memory slots exist for future expansion.

Deciding specification

The fixed 16 GB DDR4 memory capacity and soldered 1 TB NVMe SSD define the upgrade ceiling for this unit. Buyers who need more memory or additional internal storage cannot modify this configuration. The 72% colour gamut FHD touchscreen suits colour-critical work within its calibrated range. Thunderbolt 3 and HDMI 2.0 provide the only video output paths.

Questions about this item

How loud and hot does the i7-8706G get when the Precision 5530 runs demanding workloads all day?

The quad-core i7-8706G operates at 3.10 GHz base and 4.10 GHz boost inside a 15.69 inch chassis cooled by a 65-watt AC adapter; the dedicated Radeon Pro WX Vega M GL with 4GB GDDR5 shares the thermal envelope, so sustained loads will spin the fans audibly but stay within workstation limits.

Which cables or peripherals must I already own to use the two Thunderbolt 3 ports and the HDMI 2.0 output on this 5530?

You need Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C cables for the two Thunderbolt 3 ports, an HDMI 2.0 cable for the video port, and standard USB-C accessories for the two USB-C 3.1 ports that also carry PowerShare and DisplayPort signals.

Will my older USB-A drives and monitors work directly with the Precision 5530's USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 connections?

The 5530 provides only USB-C 3.1 and Thunderbolt 3 ports — no native USB-A — so legacy USB-A devices require a USB-C to USB-A adapter or hub, and older monitors need a USB-C to HDMI or DisplayPort cable.
