Mobile workstation for CAD and design

The Dell Precision 7730 7740 is a 17.3 inch FHD laptop built around an 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8750H six-core processor, 16 GB DDR4 memory and an NVIDIA Quadro P3200 graphics card with 6 GB GDDR5 video memory. It ships with Windows 10 Pro and dual NVMe M.2 storage totalling 3 TB across 1 TB and 2 TB drives. The IPS panel covers 72 % colour gamut and the silver chassis includes a webcam.

Step up from integrated graphics

The Quadro P3200 delivers professional-grade performance optimised for computer-aided design workloads, offering a significant jump over integrated graphics or consumer mobile GPUs. The six-core i7-8750H runs at 2.20 GHz with turbo up to 4.10 GHz, cutting render times for multi-threaded applications. The upgrade is worth it when your current machine struggles with large assemblies, viewport lag or GPU-accelerated plugins.

Verify Thunderbolt 3 dock and display needs

Confirm your existing docks and monitors work with the single Thunderbolt 3 port, HDMI 2.0 output and two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports. The 1920 x 1080 non-touch screen does not support pen input, so stylus users should check compatibility. Ensure your software licences transfer to Windows 10 Pro and that 16 GB RAM meets project requirements before ordering.

Questions about this item

Will the 17.3" chassis accept the 1TB and 2TB M.2 drives already installed?

The workstation ships with both a 1TB and a 2TB M.2 SSD fitted, so no additional drive mounting is required.

What is the correct order for seating the DDR4 SO-DIMM modules during a memory upgrade?

Power off, remove the base cover, align the notch on each 16GB DDR4 stick with the slot key, press firmly until the side clips click, then reassemble.

Which component typically needs thermal-paste renewal first under heavy Quadro P3200 workloads?

The dedicated GPU die usually runs hotter than the CPU, so its paste tends to degrade sooner during sustained 3D rendering.
