Precision 7730 7740 mobile workstation

The Dell Precision 7730 7740 is a 17.3 inch mobile workstation built for professionals who need desktop-class compute in a portable chassis. It ships with an 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8750H six-core processor, 128GB of DDR4 memory and a dedicated NVIDIA Quadro P3200 GPU with 6GB GDDR5 video memory. Windows 11 Pro is pre-installed.

Thunderbolt 3 and HDMI 2.0 connectivity limits

Two Thunderbolt 3 ports and one HDMI 2.0 output handle external displays and high-speed peripherals, while two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports and a headset jack cover legacy accessories. The Thunderbolt 3 interface caps at 40 Gbps, so the fastest NVMe enclosures will not reach their peak throughput. HDMI 2.0 limits 4K output to 60 Hz, which matters for high-refresh panels.

Silver aluminium chassis with dual M.2 storage

A silver aluminium chassis houses a 17.3 inch FHD IPS panel covering 72 percent colour gamut and a 256GB plus 2TB dual M.2 SSD configuration. The non-touch display keeps weight down and avoids fingerprint smudges during field work. Dual M.2 slots mean the 256GB boot drive and 2TB data drive sit side by side without a 2.5 inch bay.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 256 GB plus 2 TB dual-drive layout or a single larger drive for this Precision 7730?

This unit ships with a 256 GB M.2 drive paired with a 2 TB M.2 drive, giving two separate volumes; no single-drive alternative is listed for this configuration.

What does the 4.10 GHz turbo figure mean when the i7-8750H is inside a 17.3 inch mobile workstation?

The six-core processor can lift two cores to 4.10 GHz for short bursts while the Quadro P3200 handles graphics, but sustained all-core speeds will sit lower under thermal limits.

What does the Thunderbolt 3 port cap at for external displays or storage on this 7730?

The Thunderbolt 3 connection supports up to 40 Gb/s, enough for dual 4K 60 Hz monitors or high-speed NVMe enclosures, and it also carries USB 3.1 Gen 1 traffic.
