14.0 inch HD ThinkPad T490

This Lenovo ThinkPad T490 is a 14.0 inch laptop with a 1366 x 768 display, an Intel Core i5-8265U quad-core processor, 12 GB of DDR4 memory and a 2 TB SATA solid-state drive. It ships with Windows 10 Pro and includes a fingerprint reader, 720p webcam, Thunderbolt 3 and HDMI ports.

Suits mobile professionals needing legacy OS

Buyers who want a higher-resolution screen, a newer Windows version, discrete graphics or user-replaceable memory should look elsewhere. The 8 GB soldered portion limits future upgrades and the 60 Hz panel is not suited to colour-critical work.

2 TB SATA SSD decides fit

The single specification that determines suitability is the 2 TB SATA solid-state drive, which provides a large capacity upgrade over standard factory configurations while retaining the SATA interface.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 12 GB DDR4 configuration or look for a different capacity?

This unit ships with 12 GB DDR4 (8 GB onboard plus a 4 GB SO-DIMM). The memory is not user-expandable beyond the single slot, so choose this capacity if it matches your workload.

What does the 4.1 GHz turbo frequency deliver in daily use?

The Core i5-8265U can boost to 4.1 GHz on short bursts, giving snappy response for office apps and web browsing before thermals settle to the base 1.60 GHz.

What does the Thunderbolt 3 Type-C port support on this laptop?

The Thunderbolt 3 (Type-C) port carries data, video and charging over one cable, compatible with Thunderbolt 3 docks, displays and storage devices.
