14-inch HD+ ThinkPad T440s

The Lenovo ThinkPad T440s is a 14-inch business ultrabook powered by a dual-core Intel Core i5-4300U processor running at 1.9 GHz. It ships with Windows 10 Professional pre-installed and includes a Trusted Platform Module 1.2 security chip. Integrated Intel graphics drive the 1600 x 900 LED-backlit display.

Who it suits and who it does not

This laptop fits mobile professionals who need a lightweight carbon-fibre chassis, a backlit keyboard, a 720p webcam and VGA or Mini DisplayPort video output for docking or external monitors. Buyers who require more than 4 GB of DDR3 memory, a dedicated graphics processor, a touchscreen or a larger solid-state drive should consider other configurations.

The specification that decides fit

The system provides 4 GB of DDR3 RAM soldered to the board and a single 2.5-inch SATA SSD of 128 GB capacity. No additional memory slots or drive bays are available, so the installed memory and storage are fixed for the life of the unit.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 2.5" 128 GB SATA SSD and what step do people often miss?

Remove the bottom cover, slide the drive into the 2.5" bay, secure it with the screw, then connect the SATA cable; many forget to re-seat the battery connector before closing the case.

What maintenance or replacement will the 4 GB DDR3 memory need later?

The 4 GB DDR3 is soldered and cannot be upgraded; if capacity becomes a limit you must replace the entire system board.

What limit appears first during sustained loads on the Core i5-4300U?

The dual-core 1.9 GHz processor hits thermal throttling before the integrated graphics or SSD become bottlenecks.
