ThinkPad T490 for mobile professionals

The Lenovo ThinkPad T490 is a 14-inch ultrabook built around an Intel Core i5-8250U quad-core processor running at 1.6 GHz with 6 MB L2 cache. It ships with 8 GB of DDR4 memory and a 256 GB SSD. The non-touch IPS panel delivers 1920 x 1080 resolution. Windows 11 Pro is pre-installed, making it ready for business tasks straight out of the box.

Thermals and power in daily use

The 45 W or 65 W OEM AC adapter supplies power for typical office workloads. Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 handles standard video and productivity tasks without a discrete GPU. The slim chassis measures 12.7 x 8.5 x 0.7 inches and weighs approximately 3.2 lbs, aiding portability. Fan noise stays low during light use such as document editing or web browsing.

Ports and bundled accessories

Connectivity includes three USB 3.1 ports, one USB-C port, HDMI and an RJ-45 Ethernet jack. Intel dual-band wireless with Bluetooth 4.1 provides cable-free networking. A front-facing webcam supports video calls. The box contains the laptop and the OEM AC adapter. An SD card reader and fingerprint reader are optional and may not be present on every unit.

Questions about this item

How do I add a SATA or NVME M.2 drive to the T490 and what step is often missed?

Remove the bottom cover, insert the drive into the M.2 slot, secure it with the screw, then initialise the new volume in Windows Disk Management so the OS recognises it

Which components in this T490 are most likely to need replacement after several years of daily use?

The 45 W or 65 W AC adapter and the internal battery are the parts that typically wear out first; the 256 GB SSD and 8 GB DDR4 memory are solid-state and rarely fail

What thermal limit appears first when the Core i5-8250U runs sustained workloads on the T490?

The 15 W U-series processor hits its power limit and reduces clock speed once the cooling system saturates, so performance settles below the 1.6 GHz base frequency
