Portable 4 TB USB 3.2 Gen 1 storage

This Western Digital My Passport drive provides 4 TB of capacity in a slim black enclosure that fits in a pocket. It connects over USB 3.2 Gen 1 and remains compatible with USB 2.0 ports. The drive ships formatted NTFS for Windows 10 and 8.1 and includes WD Discovery software for backup scheduling and drive management.

Sustained workloads on mechanical media

As a mechanical hard drive, transfer rates will settle to the physical limits of the spinning platters once any cache is filled during long copy sessions. The USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface sets the maximum bus ceiling, but real-world throughput under continuous load will be lower than burst figures. The 256-bit AES hardware encryption operates on the controller without host CPU overhead.

Compatibility checks before ordering

Verify that your system can supply enough bus power over a single USB port for a 2.5-inch mechanical drive. Confirm whether you need to reformat the NTFS volume for macOS or Linux environments. Ensure a SuperSpeed USB cable is available if the supplied cable is misplaced.

Questions about this item

How much heat or noise does the 4TB My Passport produce when left running all day?

The drive has no fan and uses a 2.5-inch mechanism inside a slim 0.75-inch enclosure, so it runs silently and stays cool to the touch during continuous operation.

What must I already own to use the USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface on this drive?

A host with a USB-A or USB-C port that supports USB 3.2 Gen 1 or USB 2.0, plus the supplied SuperSpeed USB cable.

Will the NTFS formatting on the 4TB My Passport work straight away with my Windows 8.1 laptop?

Yes, the drive ships formatted NTFS for Windows 10 and 8.1, so it is ready to use without reformatting on that operating system.
