What this drive is and who it suits

The Western Digital My Passport Ultra 4TB is a portable external hard drive with a silver metal cover and a 5400 RPM mechanism. It connects via USB-C and includes a USB 3.1 adapter for older USB 3.0 ports. The drive arrives formatted for Windows 10, 8.1 or 7 and offers 256-bit AES hardware encryption with password protection through WD Discovery software.

Who should look elsewhere

This drive is not for buyers who need a solid-state device with no moving parts. It is also not for users who require bus-powered operation above the limits of a single USB 3.0 port or who need native macOS formatting without reformatting for Time Machine.

The spec that decides fit

The single specification that decides whether this is the right part is the USB-C interface combined with the included USB 3.1 adapter, which determines compatibility with the target computer's available ports.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 4TB model or a smaller capacity for regular backups?

The 4TB capacity provides ample space for large photo libraries, video projects and full system backups, while the 5400 RPM drive keeps the unit compact and quiet for daily transport.

What does the 5400 RPM speed mean for real-world file transfers?

The 5400 RPM mechanism delivers steady throughput for documents, media and incremental backups; large single files move at mechanical-drive speeds rather than SSD rates.

How does the USB 3.0 and USB-C interface affect transfer limits?

The drive uses a USB 3.0 Type-C connection with an included USB 3.1 adapter, so maximum throughput is capped by the USB 3.0 specification on both Type-C and Type-A ports.
