Connects 2.5 or 3.5 inch SATA and IDE drives plus 5.25 inch optical drives to USB 3.0 at up to 5 Gbps, includes power adapter for 3.5 inch units
This adapter connects SATA and IDE storage devices to a computer through a USB 3.0 port. It works with 2.5 and 3.5 inch hard drives, solid-state drives and 5.25 inch optical drives. The kit includes a power adapter and cables for desktop drives.
The USB 3.0 connection provides a theoretical maximum of 5Gbps and falls back to USB 2.0 and 1.1 speeds. Actual throughput depends on the drive itself and the host controller. The adapter supports drives up to 6 TB in capacity.
One 2.5 inch 44-pin IDE drive, one 3.5 inch 40-pin IDE drive and one SATA drive can be attached at the same time. Desktop 3.5 inch IDE and older SATA drives require the supplied 12V power adapter and 4-pin cable. Laptop drives typically run from USB power alone.

The adapter handles both; use the 40-pin connector and 12V/2A power adapter for 3.5-inch IDE, and the SATA connector for 2.5-inch SATA — no extra power needed for the smaller drive.
5Gbps is the USB 3.0 interface ceiling; the actual rate will match the drive’s own limit, so a mechanical disk will transfer at its native speed, not at the full 5Gbps.
It uses USB 3.0, capping the link at 5Gbps, while remaining backward compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.1 ports.
