Plugs are made for one kind of cable

A loose connector only works with the cable it was made for. RJ45 plugs come for solid or stranded conductors and for a category such as Cat5e or Cat6, and shielded cable needs shielded plugs that make a ground path. Pass-through RJ45 plugs let the wires poke out for a neater trim but need a matching crimper. Coax connectors are sized for a cable type such as RG6 or RG59, and compression fittings grip better than twist-on ones. A plug on a cable of the wrong diameter leaves wires loose.

Details that decide the fit of fiber, barrel and D-sub plugs

Fiber connectors come in LC, SC and ST styles, and a coupler can join same-style or mixed ends; the fiber type, single-mode or multi-mode, must match the cable. DC barrel plugs are described by outer and inner diameter, such as 4 by 1.7 mm, and by polarity, so a plug that fits physically can still feed the device the wrong way around. D-sub connectors for serial links come as solder-cup types that need soldering or as screw-terminal versions. Check gender, pin count and mounting before choosing.

Questions about Plugs and Connectors: RJ45, Coax, Fiber and DC

What is the difference between pass-through and standard RJ45 plugs?
Pass-through plugs let the wires run through the plug body so you can trim them flush after crimping, which also makes the color order easy to check. They need a pass-through crimper with a cutting blade; standard plugs use a regular crimper.
How do I find the right size for a DC barrel connector?
Measure the outer and inner diameter of the plug in millimeters, or read them from the device or power supply label, such as 5.5 by 2.1 mm. Also match the polarity, shown by a small symbol with a dot, and the voltage.
Can I use any fiber connector with any fiber cable?
No. The connector style, LC, SC or ST, must fit the equipment, and the fiber type must match, since single-mode and multi-mode are not interchangeable. Polish type and duplex or simplex layout matter too, so read the cable label first.
