Dual-link pins and the resolutions a DVI cable can reach

DVI-D carries digital video only, DVI-A only analog, and DVI-I both. A single-link DVI-D cable tops out around 1920 x 1200 at 60 Hz. Anything beyond that, such as a 2560 x 1440 or 2560 x 1600 monitor, or a 1080p screen at 120 or 144 Hz, needs dual link, which has all 24 pins plus the flat blade (the 24+1 you see in product titles). A dual-link cable also works on a single-link port, so it is the safer pick, but a single-link cable on a dual-link screen caps the picture.

Converter cables with HDMI, DisplayPort or VGA at the other end

HDMI to DVI-D cables carry the same digital signal, so they work either way round, but DVI has no audio and sound needs a separate path. DisplayPort to DVI only works from a port with dual-mode output, or through an active adapter. DVI to VGA cables need analog pins at the DVI end: a DVI-I or DVI-A port has the four extra pins around the blade, while a DVI-D port does not and will not drive a VGA monitor. Mini DVI is an older small connector, so compare the plug with your port.

Questions about DVI Cables for Monitors

Do I need dual link for a 1440p monitor?
In most cases yes. 2560 x 1440 at 60 Hz exceeds single-link bandwidth, so the screen, the graphics port and the cable must all be dual link. If any one is single link, the picture is limited to a lower resolution or refresh rate.
Can a DVI cable carry audio?
No. DVI carries video only. If you use an HDMI to DVI cable with a screen that has speakers, send the sound separately, for example through the headphone jack or a separate audio cable from the PC.
How can I tell DVI-D from DVI-I at a glance?
Look at the flat blade. A DVI-I connector has four extra pins around it for analog video, while DVI-D has only the blade. A DVI-D plug fits both kinds of socket, but a DVI-I plug will not fit a DVI-D socket.
