Three jobs in one category: processing, syncing, treating
The listings fall into three jobs. Processors, such as digital speaker controllers and preamps, shape or protect a signal between mixer and amplifier. Sync accessories carry timing between devices: word clock keeps digital audio gear running on the same sample clock over BNC cables, and timecode gives cameras and recorders a shared time reference. Specialist cables adapt connectors such as 5-pin Lemo, TA5 and 3.5 mm to XLR or BNC. Match the connector names at both ends, not just the cable length.
What NRC and thickness tell you about acoustic foam
Foam wedges and tiles reduce echo inside a room by absorbing mid and high frequencies. They do not soundproof, because sound still passes through walls. NRC, the noise reduction coefficient, averages absorption between 250 Hz and 2 kHz on a scale up to 1, so a higher number means more absorption. Thin foam does little for bass, which needs thicker, denser panels or bass traps. Check any stated flame rating and whether tiles mount with glue or tabs on your wall.
Questions about Audio Processors, Sync Cables and Acoustic Foam
- Will acoustic foam soundproof my room?
- No. Foam absorbs reflections inside the room so recordings sound cleaner, but it is too light to stop sound passing through walls. Soundproofing needs mass and sealed gaps, not foam.
- What is word clock used for?
- It gives digital devices one shared sample clock, so converters, interfaces and recorders stay in step and avoid clicks or drift. You need it mainly when several digital audio devices must run in sync.
- Where does a digital speaker controller fit in a PA system?
- It sits between the mixer and the amplifiers and handles crossover splits, equalization, delay and limiting for a speaker system, using several inputs and outputs. It protects the speakers and tunes the system to the room.
