Start with a tape measure. Listings state overall length, such as 5 m, 10 m or 100 ft, but part of that is a plain lead wire to the plug, so measure the lit section. Divide by the LED count to find spacing: 100 LEDs on 10 m is a light every 10 cm, which looks sparse on a tree and fine on a window. Wire color helps lights vanish, with green on foliage, white on pale surfaces and clear or black elsewhere.
Product type separates outdoor sets from indoor ones, and the difference is the rating: outdoor lights need sealed connectors and a weather rating such as IP44 for splashes or IP65 for rain and spray, and the plug end should stay under cover. Many sets run through a low-voltage adapter, which is safer to handle and keeps the voltage at the wire low. Mains-powered strings state how many sets you may connect end to end, so check the limit before chaining.
