What MICR reading, imaging and speed each do

Check scanners do two jobs. A MICR reader reads the magnetic ink characters along the bottom, which carry the routing number, account number and check number. An imaging scanner also captures a picture of the front and back, so choose dual-sided if your process needs both faces. Small single-feed units suit a counter with a few checks, while models with a feeder of around 150 sheets and speeds of 100 or more checks a minute suit batches. Resolution is typically 200 or 300 dpi.

How the scanner connects, and what your software accepts

USB is the usual connection, with Ethernet on some models for shared use and RS-232 serial on older systems. Keyboard-wedge or HID modes feed the MICR text straight into any application as if it were typed. Some units include a three-track magnetic stripe reader so one device handles both checks and cards. Before buying, confirm that your check-processing or accounting software supports the exact model, since drivers and supported interfaces vary between vendors.

Questions about Check Scanners and MICR Readers

What is a MICR line?
It is the row of special magnetic-ink characters along the bottom edge of a check, holding the routing number, account number and check number. A MICR reader recognizes them magnetically, which is more reliable than reading printed digits from an image.
Single-sided or dual-sided scanning?
Single-sided units capture only the front, which can be enough for simple reading. Dual-sided models capture the back as well, which many deposit and archiving processes need. Check your software or bank requirements before choosing.
Do I need the magnetic stripe reader option?
Only if you also want to swipe ID or membership cards on the same device. It saves a USB port and desk space, but it does nothing for check reading, so skip it if you only process checks.
