How the aisle is organised: cameras, recorders and kits

Cameras come in three families. Analog cameras send video over coax cable to a DVR. IP cameras send digital video over Ethernet, often powered by PoE, to an NVR, a memory card or an app. Wi-Fi cameras skip the data cable but still need power. Recorders hold the video, kits bundle cameras with a recorder and sometimes a drive, and mounts, power supplies and software complete the picture. For a ready package, look at security camera systems; for a single camera, try PoE and IP cameras.

The first four decisions: place, picture, power and storage

Decide where the camera goes first. Outdoor spots need a weather-resistant rating, and indoor models are not sealed. Then choose resolution: 1080p covers rooms and doorways, while 2K and 4K add detail for faces or plates but need more storage and a recorder that can handle them. Next comes power: PoE, 12 V DC, battery or solar. Finally decide where footage lives, on an SD card, a recorder with hard drives or the maker's cloud, because that also fixes how far back you can look.

Questions about Security Cameras, Recorders and Video Monitoring

What is the difference between a DVR and an NVR?
A DVR digitizes video from analog cameras sent over coax cable, while an NVR records digital streams from IP cameras over the network. The type of camera you choose decides which recorder you need.
Are higher-resolution cameras always better?
Not always. More pixels help when you must recognize faces or read plates at a distance, but they raise storage and network demands. A well-placed 1080p camera often beats a poorly placed 4K one.
Is a camera that is described as weather resistant safe outdoors?
Weather resistant usually covers rain and dust, but check the ingress rating, such as IP66, and the operating temperature range. Indoor models lack that sealing and fail quickly when exposed to moisture.
