Older analog cameras are rated in TV lines, from about 420 to 700 TVL, which gives standard-definition pictures. HD analog formats such as HD-TVI, AHD and HDCVI carry 1080p or more over the same coax, but the camera and the DVR must support the same format. Many recorders accept several, so read the DVR's list. A few listings here are in fact IP cameras with RJ45 ports, so confirm the connection says BNC, because an IP camera will not plug into an analog recorder.
A fixed 3.6 mm lens gives a wide view for rooms and entrances, while a varifocal lens, listed as 3.5 to 8 mm or 4 to 9 mm, lets you narrow the view to reach farther. Infrared LEDs give night vision in black and white. Domes resist tampering and hide the lens direction, bullets show the direction and are easy to aim, and dummy cameras only deter, since they record nothing. Most cameras run on 12 V DC, so plan a power supply and cable.
