Precision 5530 Mobile Workstation

The Dell Precision 5530 is a 15.6-inch mobile workstation built for professionals who need certified graphics and a six-core Intel Core i9-8950HK processor in a silver chassis. It ships with Windows 11 Pro, 16 GB of DDR4 memory and a dual-drive layout that pairs a 512 GB M.2 drive with a 1 TB SSD. The 1920 x 1080 IPS panel covers 72 percent colour gamut and is non-touch.

Upgrading from integrated or entry discrete graphics

Moving to the dedicated NVIDIA Quadro P2000 with 4 GB of GDDR5 memory makes sense when ISV-certified drivers and stable viewport performance outweigh raw gaming frame rates. The jump is worth it if your current laptop throttles under sustained CAD, DCC or simulation loads and you need Thunderbolt 3 plus HDMI 2.0 for external displays. The 8th Gen hexa-core CPU reaches 4.80 GHz with Turbo Boost for burst workloads.

Suits engineers and designers on certified apps

This configuration suits engineers, architects and content creators who rely on Quadro-certified drivers and a colour-accurate IPS screen. Buyers who want more than 16 GB of system memory or a higher-resolution display should look at other models. The non-touch panel and fixed 16 GB RAM limit appeal for touch-first workflows or users who need 32 GB capacity.

Questions about this item

Does the 15.6" chassis have a 2.5" bay for adding a SATA drive alongside the M.2 and 1TB SSD?

The specifications list only the 512 GB M.2 and 1 TB SSD with no HDD, so there is no 2.5" SATA bay in this configuration.

Which screw or latch must be released first when opening the base to reach the M.2 slot?

Remove all nine Torx screws on the bottom cover, then pry from the front edge near the trackpad; the hidden screw under the centre rubber foot is the one most people miss.

When the 16 GB DDR4 memory needs to be expanded to 32 GB, which slot is used?

The board has two SO-DIMM slots; one is occupied by the factory 16 GB stick, so the upgrade goes into the empty second slot.
