Compact rugged storage for field work

The LaCie Rugged Mini LAC9000298 is a 2TB portable hard drive built for photographers, videographers and professionals who transport large files. Its orange rubber sleeve provides shock, rain and pressure resistance rated to withstand a one-ton car. The 2.5-inch form factor measures .75 by 3.39 by 5.31 inches and weighs .66 lb.

USB 3.0 speed ceiling and backward compatibility

The drive uses a USB 3.0 interface with a theoretical maximum of 5Gbps, roughly four times faster than USB 2.0. Real-world throughput will be lower and depends on the host controller, cable quality and file mix. It remains fully usable on USB 2.0 ports at reduced speed, and the supplied cable is USB 2.0-compatible.

Simple plug-and-play setup with common pitfalls

No external power adapter is required; the drive draws power from the USB port. Installation consists of connecting the cable and running the included backup software for Windows 7, Windows 8 or Mac OS X 10.5 and later. Failures usually stem from insufficient port power on older laptops, damaged cables or missing the 600MB of free space needed for the software suite.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 2TB Rugged Mini or a higher-capacity Rugged model?

This listing is for the single 2TB capacity (model LAC9000298). If you need more space, you would need a different Rugged model with a larger stated capacity.

What does the 5400 RPM speed mean for everyday file transfers?

The drive spins at 5400 RPM and connects via USB 3.0, allowing transfers up to 5 Gbps. An 800MB video file can move in roughly 6 seconds under typical conditions.

How does the USB 3.0 interface perform when plugged into a USB 2.0 port?

The drive is fully backward compatible with USB 2.0 ports. It will work normally but transfer speeds will be limited to the USB 2.0 maximum rather than the 5 Gbps possible with USB 3.0.
