15.6-inch QHD+ 165Hz gaming laptop

The MSI Katana 15 pairs a 15.6-inch anti-glare IPS panel at 2560 x 1600 resolution with a 165Hz refresh rate. An Intel Core i9-14900HX processor delivers 24 cores and 32 threads for heavy multitasking. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 with 12GB GDDR7 handles modern titles at high settings. This configuration targets gamers and creators who need strong single-machine performance.

Thermals, noise and power draw in normal use

The chassis measures 14.13 x 10.2 x 0.98 inches and weighs 4.96 pounds, providing room for the cooling system to manage the i9-14900HX and RTX 5070. Fan behaviour will scale with the combined load of the 24-core CPU and 12GB GPU. Under typical gaming sessions the system balances clock speeds against acoustic output. Power is supplied through the dedicated input port.

Ports, webcam, keyboard and connectivity

A single HDMI 2.1 output drives external displays at high refresh rates. Three USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports and one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port cover peripherals and storage. Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 handle wired and wireless networking. The 720p HD webcam and 4-zone RGB backlit keyboard support streaming and low-light use.

Questions about this item

How do I install extra RAM in the Katana 15 and which step do people usually miss?

Open the bottom panel, insert the DDR5 stick into the free slot, then re-seat the battery connector before closing — skipping that connector step leaves the laptop dead on first boot.

What maintenance will the RTX 5070 12GB GDDR7 need later?

Clean the intake vents every few months and repaste the GPU die if temperatures climb above spec after a couple of years.

What limit appears first during long gaming sessions on the i9-14900HX?

The CPU hits its thermal ceiling before the GPU, so sustained clocks drop to protect the 24-core processor.
