A breaker's rating has several parts. The amp rating, such as 30 A, is the current it is built to carry; a sustained overload above it trips the breaker, faster as the overload grows, and the rating must suit the wire it protects. The pole count says how many conductors it switches: one pole for a 120 V circuit, two poles for 240 V or a 120/240 V circuit with common trip, three poles for three-phase. The voltage rating must be at least your circuit voltage.
Miniature circuit breakers add a trip curve. A C curve trips on a short-circuit current of about five to ten times the rating, which suits general loads and small motors. B trips sooner for resistive loads, and D tolerates the large inrush of transformers and big motors. Choose the curve from the load and the available fault current, and ask an electrician if you are unsure.
Panel breakers are not universal. A plug-in breaker is made for a particular panel family and usually listed only for it, so match the panel maker and series; DIN-rail breakers snap onto a rail instead. The interrupting rating, often written AIC or kA, is the highest fault current the breaker can safely clear, and it must exceed the fault current available at the panel. Never use a breaker that is not listed for the panel.
The same aisle holds enclosures and plugs. Enclosures are rated by type: indoor general-purpose boxes differ from rain-tight and watertight types, and size is given in inches for height, width and depth. Locking plugs such as 20 A 480 V or 125/250 V styles must match the receptacle's configuration, because the blade shapes differ for each voltage and amp rating. Bus plugs, bonding kits and connectors are matched by amp rating and the equipment they fit.
