Radiator valve handles: stem type, steam or hot water

Replacement wheel handles for steam and hot-water radiator valves fit a particular stem, which may be square, splined or flat-sided, and the stem's size matters as much as its shape. Some handles are sold as multi-fit, for example 3 in 1 or 4 in 1. Take the old handle off first and compare it with the listing, because a handle that spins on the stem will not open or close the valve.

Steam and hot-water systems behave differently. A steam radiator valve should be fully open or fully closed, because a partly open valve traps condensate and causes banging. A hot-water radiator valve can be set partway to adjust heat. Boiler accessories in this category are listed by connection thread and pressure rating, so match both to the boiler's documentation.

Large EC fans and safety labels: the other listings

Some listings are industrial fans that cool radiators and heat exchangers, such as 280 mm EC centrifugal units around 1 kW. They are chosen by wheel diameter, power, airflow rating and control interface: EC fans accept a speed signal, commonly 0 to 10 V. Check the supply voltage and phase, and whether the airflow direction, mounting plate and inlet fit your cabinet.

Safety signs and hazard labels also appear here. Choose them by wording, size and material: aluminum signs last outdoors, while coated paper labels suit indoor pipes and equipment. A corrosive or hot-surface label only helps if it matches the hazard and is placed where it will be seen. Regulations may dictate colors and symbols, so follow your local requirements.

Questions about Radiator Valves, Radiator Fans and Boiler Parts

How do I match a replacement radiator valve handle?
Remove the old handle and examine the stem underneath: note whether it is square, splined or flat, count the splines and measure the width. Match those to the listing, or choose a multi-fit handle that names your stem type. Tighten the screw only until the handle is firm.
Why does my steam radiator bang?
Banging usually means condensate is trapped, often because the valve is partly closed or the radiator is not sloped back toward the valve. Keep the valve fully open or fully closed, and check the slope with a level. Persistent noise is worth a technician's look.
What does EC mean on a radiator fan?
EC stands for electronically commutated: a brushless motor with built-in electronics. It runs from mains power but can be speed controlled by a low-voltage signal, and it is efficient at part speed. Compare it with a plain AC fan, which usually runs at fixed speed.
