Two channels or four? Count the sources you will blend

Each channel strip takes one source. Two channels cover the classic two-deck set; four or more let you bring in extra players, a laptop, a sampler or a microphone without rewiring. Check which input each channel has: turntables need a phono input with a built-in phono preamp unless they have a preamp of their own, while media players, laptops and phones use line inputs. Plugging a turntable without a preamp into a line input gives a very quiet, thin sound. Listings show inputs such as RCA, 6.35 mm, XLR and USB.

Sound card, outputs and parts that wear out

A mixer with a built-in USB sound card lets DJ software play through its faders and headphone cue, but check which software it supports. Look at the outputs: XLR master outputs connect cleanly to professional PAs and powered speakers over long cables, while RCA outputs suit home hi-fi and small systems. The crossfader, the part that wears first, is often sold as a replacement, so check it fits your mixer model. Small battery or USB-powered mixers suit travel.

Questions about DJ Mixers and Mixing Boards

Can I connect turntables straight to a DJ mixer?
Only if the channel has a phono input, or the turntable has its own preamp set to line output. Without either, the turntable's very weak signal needs a separate phono preamp before a line input.
What is the difference between a DJ mixer and a DJ controller?
A mixer is the central hub that blends the outputs of separate players. A controller combines mixer controls and deck controls in one unit to drive DJ software on a laptop. Choose a mixer if you use separate turntables or media players.
What does the crossfader do?
It blends smoothly between the sources assigned to its left and right sides. Many mixers let you adjust its curve, from a smooth blend to a sharp cut, which scratch DJs rely on. Replacement faders are sold per model.
