Brightness is measured in lumens, and ANSI lumens is the figure that follows a standard test. Around 3,000 lumens copes with a meeting room with some lights dimmed; larger rooms and rooms with windows need 4,000 or more. Resolution should match the source: 1024 by 768 suits plain slides, 1280 by 800 or 1920 by 1200 fits laptop screens, 1080p handles video, and 4K shows fine detail on large screens. Aspect ratio matters as well: 16:10 fits many laptops, while 16:9 is the video standard.
Lamp projectors are bright and familiar, but the bulb dims and must be replaced. LED and laser sources run for many thousands of hours with no bulb to change, though pocket LED models are less bright. DLP and 3LCD are the main imaging types; 3LCD avoids the rainbow flashes that a few viewers notice on single-chip DLP. For small rooms, a short-throw projector fills the screen from close range. Check ports, since HDMI is standard and VGA still appears on older equipment.
