Rugged laptop for field work

The Dell Latitude 5424 is a 14.0-inch rugged notebook built to military-grade durability standards for harsh environments. It runs on an Intel Core i5-8350U quad-core processor with 16 GB DDR4 memory and dual SSD storage totalling 256 GB and 2 TB. The 10-point touchscreen works with gloves and stays readable in direct sunlight. Windows 11 Pro 64-bit comes pre-installed.

Thermals and power in daily use

The integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 keeps heat output modest during typical office and field tasks. Passive-rugged chassis design dissipates warmth without loud fans, so noise stays low in quiet settings. Dual internal battery options (6- and 9-cell) support all-day shifts away from wall power, and an optional hot-swap bridge battery extends runtime further without shutdown.

Ports and connectivity bundle

Connectivity includes USB 3.0 ports, USB Type-C, HDMI, DisplayPort, a serial port and RJ-45 Ethernet for legacy and modern peripherals. Wireless options cover Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, optional 4G LTE and dedicated GPS for field navigation. The package includes a Dell OEM charger; WWAN modules and spare battery chargers are sold separately.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 256 GB M.2 and 2 TB M.2 drives in the Latitude 5424, and what step is often missed?

Remove the bottom cover screws, insert each M.2 module at an angle into its slot, then press down and secure with the retention screw — the step often missed is fastening that screw so the drive cannot work loose under vibration.

What maintenance or replacement will the internal 6-cell or 9-cell battery packs need later?

The internal battery packs are user-replaceable; after many charge cycles they lose capacity and can be swapped by releasing the latch on the bottom case and inserting a fresh pack.

What thermal limit appears first when the i5-8350U runs sustained loads at up to 3.60 GHz?

The integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 shares the same thermal envelope as the CPU, so GPU-intensive work hits the temperature ceiling before the processor alone would.
