Rugged 14 field laptop

The Dell Latitude 5424 is a new rugged notebook built for professionals who work in harsh environments such as construction, utilities or public safety. Its chassis passes military-grade shock, vibration and temperature testing so the device survives drops, dust and moisture that would stop a standard office laptop. The 14.0-inch touchscreen adds glove-friendly input for outdoor data collection.

Connectivity and mounting for mobile work

A full set of ports includes USB 3.0, USB Type-C, HDMI, DisplayPort, a serial port and RJ-45 Ethernet for legacy industrial gear and modern peripherals alike. Dual M.2 solid-state drives provide 128 GB and 2 TB of storage without moving parts, reducing failure risk from vibration. Integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth keep the unit linked to networks and sensors in the field.

Thermals and power in daily use

The Intel Core i5-8350U quad-core processor runs at up to 3.60 GHz with Intel UHD Graphics 620, delivering enough performance for Windows 10 Pro and typical business applications while staying cool inside the sealed chassis. Fan noise remains low during normal office or field tasks. The 16 GB DDR4 memory and dual SSD configuration keep power draw modest, supporting long shifts on the internal battery.

Questions about this item

What USB standard do the Type-A ports on the Latitude 5424 support, and what practical speed ceiling does that impose?

The laptop provides USB 3.0 Type-A ports, which cap real-world throughput at roughly 5 Gbps.

What physical drive bays or slots must be free to accommodate the dual M.2 SSD configuration?

Two M.2 slots are required; the system ships with a 128 GB and a 2 TB drive already installed in those slots.

How is the second M.2 SSD installed, and which step do people often miss?

Remove the bottom cover, insert the M.2 drive at an angle into the empty slot, then secure it with the tiny retention screw — the step most often missed.
