Precision 7730 mobile workstation

The Dell Precision 7730 is a 17.3 inch mobile workstation built around an 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8750H six-core processor with 128 GB of DDR4 memory. Dual storage combines a 256 GB and a 1 TB NVMe M.2 SSD for fast project access. A dedicated NVIDIA Quadro P3200 with 6 GB GDDR5 handles professional graphics workloads. Windows 11 Pro is pre-installed.

Sustained workload behaviour

The hexa-core CPU runs at a 2.20 GHz base frequency and can reach 4.10 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost across 12 threads during extended compute tasks. The Quadro P3200 delivers professional-grade graphics performance optimised for CAD and comparable to a GTX 1060 in raw throughput. Dual NVMe drives maintain high sequential throughput without the thermal throttling typical of single-drive layouts. Thunderbolt 3 and HDMI 2.0 support multi-display workflows without bandwidth contention.

Thermals noise and power

Dell's revised thermal design moves heat away from the CPU and GPU through a vapour-chamber layout that keeps surface temperatures lower during long renders. Fan speed ramps gradually rather than spiking, so acoustic output stays consistent in quiet offices. The included AC adapter supplies sufficient power for full CPU and GPU utilisation without battery drain. The 72 % colour gamut IPS panel draws minimal power, aiding battery life in mobile use.

Questions about this item

How loud and hot does the Precision 7730 get when the i7-8750H and Quadro P3200 6GB run all day?

The laptop uses Dell's revised thermal design with dual fans and heat pipes sized for the six-core CPU and dedicated GPU; under sustained load the fans ramp up but remain within typical mobile-workstation noise levels.

Which ports and cables must I already own to connect external monitors to the Thunderbolt 3 and HDMI 2.0 outputs?

You need a Thunderbolt 3 cable or adapter for the USB-C port and a standard HDMI 2.0 cable for the HDMI port; both support 4K at 60 Hz.

Will my older USB 3.0 docking station work with the two USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A ports on this 7730?

Yes, the two USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A ports are backward-compatible with USB 3.0 and 2.0 devices, so existing docks and peripherals connect without adapters.
