Precision 7730 mobile workstation for CAD

The Dell Precision 7730 is a 17.3-inch mobile workstation built around an 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8750H six-core processor and an NVIDIA Quadro P3200 GPU with 6GB GDDR5 memory. It ships with 16GB DDR4 RAM and a 1TB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD running Windows 11 Pro. The configuration targets engineers and designers who need certified professional graphics in a portable chassis.

FHD IPS panel at 72% colour gamut

The 1920 x 1080 IPS display covers 72% colour gamut, which suits general CAD modelling but falls short of wide-gamut proofing workflows. Video output relies on HDMI 2.0 and a single Thunderbolt 3 port for external monitors or docks. Two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports handle peripherals, while the non-touch screen removes pen-input support for sketching or markup tasks.

Steps up from integrated graphics

Replacing a thin-and-light with integrated graphics or a dual-core CPU, the Quadro P3200 delivers certified driver stability for SolidWorks, Revit and similar ISV applications, performing comparably to a GeForce GTX 1060 in raw throughput. The hexa-core i7-8750H cuts multi-threaded render times versus four-core predecessors. Buyers who need 10-bit colour, ECC memory or dual-GPU scaling should evaluate larger Precision models instead.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 16 GB DDR4 RAM and 1 TB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD configuration or look for a different capacity?

This unit ships with 16 GB DDR4 memory and a 1 TB PCIe NVMe M.2 drive. The platform supports up to 128 GB DDR4 and storage options from 128 GB to 4 TB, so you can select a higher capacity at purchase if your workload demands more memory or space.

What does the 2.20 GHz base clock and 4.10 GHz turbo mean for daily performance on the i7-8750H?

The six-core i7-8750H runs at 2.20 GHz under sustained load and can boost to 4.10 GHz for short bursts, giving strong single-thread responsiveness for CAD and snappy multitasking across its 12 threads.

What does the Thunderbolt 3 port actually cap for external displays and storage?

Thunderbolt 3 provides up to 40 Gbps bandwidth, driving two 4K displays or one 5K panel while also allowing high-speed NVMe storage enclosures and docks through the same USB-C connector.
