Mobile workstation for CAD

The Dell Precision 7730 is a 17.3-inch mobile workstation built around an 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8750H six-core processor and an NVIDIA Quadro P3200 GPU with 6GB GDDR5 memory. It targets engineers and designers who need certified driver stability for computer-aided design and similar professional 3D applications.

Dual NVMe storage and Thunderbolt 3

Two M.2 slots hold a 256GB drive plus a 2TB NVMe SSD, giving fast boot and project space without a 2.5-inch bay. A Thunderbolt 3 port, two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports, HDMI 2.0 and a combo audio jack handle docks, external displays and peripherals so the chassis stays compact.

16GB DDR4 and 6GB VRAM headroom

The 16GB DDR4 configuration handles typical CAD assemblies and multi-app workflows; larger datasets will hit the memory ceiling. The Quadro P3200 6GB VRAM covers most viewport and rendering tasks at 1920 x 1080, while complex GPU compute or higher-resolution external monitors will exhaust the frame buffer.

Questions about this item

How does the i7-8750H handle sustained workloads before thermal throttling?

The six-core i7-8750H runs at a base 2.20 GHz and can reach 4.10 GHz with Turbo Boost; under continuous load the cooling system will limit clock speeds to manage heat.

What fan noise and surface temperatures should I expect during all-day rendering?

The Precision 7730 uses a dual-fan thermal design that keeps the chassis warm but not hot during extended GPU and CPU tasks; fan noise rises to an audible but not intrusive level.

Which dock or peripherals do I need to drive two external 4K monitors?

The laptop provides one Thunderbolt 3 port and one HDMI 2.0 output; a Thunderbolt 3 dock or USB-C video adapter is required for the second 4K display.
