Mobile workstation for CAD and 3D modelling

The Dell Precision 7730 is a 17.3-inch mobile workstation built around an 8th Generation Intel Core i7-8750H six-core processor running at 2.20 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 4.10 GHz. It ships with 16 GB of DDR4 memory and a dual-drive configuration totalling 3 TB of NVMe solid-state storage. Windows 11 Pro is pre-installed on the silver chassis.

NVIDIA Quadro P3200 with 6 GB GDDR5

The dedicated Quadro P3200 graphics card provides 6 GB of GDDR5 video memory and is optimised for computer-aided design workloads, with performance most comparable to a GeForce GTX 1060. The 17.3-inch FHD IPS panel delivers a 1920 x 1080 resolution and covers 72 percent colour gamut for accurate visual review. Thunderbolt 3 and HDMI 2.0 outputs support external displays.

3 TB dual NVMe storage and 16 GB RAM headroom

The combined 1 TB plus 2 TB NVMe M.2 drives give ample room for large project files, operating system and applications without relying on mechanical drives. Sixteen gigabytes of DDR4 memory handles typical CAD assemblies and moderate simulation datasets, while the six-core processor sustains multi-threaded rendering tasks. Buyers who need more than 16 GB of system memory or multiple GPU configurations will need a different platform.

Questions about this item

What real-world performance does the six-core i7-8750H at 2.20 GHz with Turbo up to 4.10 GHz deliver in this 17.3" chassis?

The 8750H runs at 2.20 GHz base and can reach 4.10 GHz on Turbo across its six cores and twelve threads, giving strong multi-threaded throughput for rendering and simulation while the Precision 7730 cooling keeps clocks sustained.

How does the single Thunderbolt 3 port limit external GPU or dual 4K display setups?

One Thunderbolt 3 port provides up to 40 Gb/s bandwidth, enough for a single external GPU or two 4K displays at 60 Hz, but daisy-chaining multiple high-bandwidth devices will share that single pipe.

Will the dual M.2 SSD configuration (1TB + 2TB) fit in the 7730 without removing the 2.5" bay caddy?

The 7730 houses two M.2 slots on the motherboard; the 1TB and 2TB NVMe drives occupy both slots directly, leaving the 2.5" bay empty and no caddy removal needed.
