Precision 7730 mobile workstation

The Dell Precision 7730 is a 17.3-inch mobile workstation built around an 8th Generation Intel Core i7-8750H six-core processor. It ships with 32 GB of DDR4 memory and dual solid-state storage comprising a 512 GB drive plus a 4 TB drive. A dedicated NVIDIA Quadro P3200 graphics card with 6 GB of GDDR5 memory drives the 1920 x 1080 IPS display. Windows 11 Pro comes pre-installed.

Suited for CAD and 3D workflows

Engineers and designers who need certified professional graphics for CAD, modelling or rendering will find the Quadro P3200 a good match. The 17.3-inch FHD panel offers 72 % colour gamut for visual accuracy. Buyers who require a touchscreen or a higher-resolution display should look elsewhere. The chassis provides Thunderbolt 3, HDMI 2.0 and USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports for peripheral connectivity.

Quadro P3200 6 GB GDDR5 decides fit

The single specification that determines suitability is the NVIDIA Quadro P3200 with 6 GB of GDDR5 video memory. This professional GPU is optimised for computer-aided design applications and delivers performance comparable to a GeForce GTX 1060. If your workload demands more video memory or newer GPU architecture, this workstation will not meet that requirement.

Questions about this item

How do I install the second M.2 SSD and what step do people miss?

The laptop has two M.2 slots; the 512 GB drive occupies one. Insert the 4 TB drive into the empty slot at an angle, press down and secure with the screw — many forget the screw and the drive lifts off the contacts.

Which component will need replacement first under heavy daily use?

The 6 GB GDDR5 memory on the Quadro P3200 is soldered and cannot be upgraded; if VRAM becomes a bottleneck the whole board must be swapped, so monitor usage in demanding CAD workloads.

What thermal limit appears first during sustained loads?

The six-core i7-8750H hits its 4.10 GHz turbo ceiling briefly, then throttles to base clocks once the cooling solution saturates, so expect clock-speed reduction before GPU limits arrive.
