They connect motherboards or host controllers to internal Serial ATA hard drives and DVD drives. Each end has a locking latch for a secure connection. The cables carry data only and do not supply power to the attached drive.

SATA III 6 Gbps interface practical limits

The cables conform to SATA revision 3.0 and support data transfer rates up to 6 Gbps. Actual throughput is limited by the rating of the attached equipment. They are backwards compatible with SATA I and SATA II devices. The six-inch length is suited to tight internal routing but cannot span longer distances inside larger cases.
