Reading lumens, watts and color temperature

Watts only tell you how much power an LED draws; lumens tell you how much light it gives. Two 50 W floods can look very different if one is more efficient, so compare lumens when the listing gives them. Color temperature changes the feel: around 3000K is warm and yellowish, while 5000K to 6000K is the cool daylight white common on security and work lights. A flood spreads light wide for walls and yards, while a spot narrows it to pick out a tree or a gate.

Mains wiring, solar panels and motion sensors

Mains floods give steady output every night, but hard-wired ones need a weatherproof junction and often an electrician. Solar floods are easy to place, yet their output and runtime depend on the panel getting sun, and the panel usually sits on the unit or on a short cable. Sensors add a second decision: check the detection distance, whether the timer and sensitivity can be adjusted, and whether several heads can be linked so one trigger lights them all. Aluminum bodies carry heat away from the LEDs better than plastic.

Questions about Outdoor Floodlights and Spotlights

How many lumens does a driveway or yard flood need?
It depends on the area and how dark it is. A few hundred lumens lights an entrance or a side door; a thousand or more suits a driveway or a wide yard. Mounting high spreads light further, but also dilutes it at ground level.
Is a 5000K floodlight too harsh for a house?
Cool white at 5000K looks crisp and close to daylight, which suits security and work areas. Around living spaces many people prefer 3000K, which looks warmer on brick, wood and foliage. Some models offer a switch between settings.
Can I plug a floodlight into an outlet instead of wiring it?
Some floods come with a cord and plug and can go on an outdoor-rated, ground-fault-protected outlet. Hard-wired models connect to a junction box instead. Check the listing for a plug and cord length, and keep the connection off the ground and out of standing water.
