Precision mobile workstation

The Dell Precision 5530 is a 15.6-inch mobile workstation built around an 8th Generation Intel Core i9-8950HK six-core processor and NVIDIA Quadro P2000 graphics with 4GB GDDR5 memory. It ships with Windows 10 Pro, 16GB DDR4 RAM and dual storage comprising a 1TB M.2 drive plus a 4TB SSD. The UHD touch display resolves 3840 x 2160 on an IPS panel with 72% colour gamut coverage.

Thunderbolt 3 and HDMI 2.0 limits

External display bandwidth is capped by the single Thunderbolt 3 port running at x4 PCIe and the HDMI 2.0 output. The Thunderbolt connection also carries USB 3.1 Gen 1 signalling, so total peripheral throughput shares that pipe. No additional video outputs are present, so multi-monitor setups beyond two external screens require a dock or daisy-chained Thunderbolt devices.

Upgrading from integrated-graphics laptops

This unit replaces thin-and-light notebooks that rely on integrated graphics and single-drive configurations. The jump is worthwhile when ISV-certified Quadro drivers, dedicated 4GB GDDR5 VRAM and the combined 5TB of solid-state capacity are required for CAD, simulation or video workflows. Buyers who need more than 16GB system memory or a newer processor architecture should look elsewhere.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 1TB M.2 plus 4TB SSD configuration or a smaller single drive?

The 1TB M.2 plus 4TB SSD layout gives a fast boot drive and a large secondary volume for projects, while smaller single-drive options reduce total capacity.

What does the i9-8950HK at 2.90 GHz up to 4.80 GHz mean for daily workloads?

Six cores and twelve threads with Turbo Boost to 4.80 GHz deliver strong multi-threaded performance for rendering, simulation and compile jobs.

What does Thunderbolt 3 with x4 PCIe actually cap in practice?

Thunderbolt 3 provides x4 PCIe bandwidth for external GPUs, high-speed storage and dual 4K displays through a single Type-C port.
