Professional mobile workstation

The Dell Precision 7730 is a 17.3-inch mobile workstation built around an 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8750H six-core processor running at 2.20 GHz with Turbo up to 4.10 GHz. It carries 64 GB of DDR4 memory and dual M.2 storage comprising a 256 GB drive plus a 1 TB NVMe SSD. An NVIDIA Quadro P3200 with 6 GB GDDR5 drives the 1920 x 1080 IPS display. Windows 10 Pro is pre-installed.

Suited for CAD and 3D workflows

This configuration serves engineers and designers who need certified Quadro drivers and a large colour-accurate screen for computer-aided design or rendering. The 72% colour gamut panel and 6 GB of dedicated video memory handle complex assemblies. Buyers who require a touchscreen, a higher refresh-rate panel or more than 64 GB of system memory should consider other models.

Quadro P3200 6 GB GDDR5 GPU

The single specification that determines fit is the professional graphics card. The Quadro P3200 delivers 6 GB of GDDR5 memory and ISV-certified drivers for SolidWorks, CATIA and similar applications. If your workload relies on consumer GeForce features or demands more video memory than 6 GB, this workstation will not meet the requirement.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 256 GB and 1 TB M.2 drives in the Precision 7730, and which slot do people put the OS drive in by mistake?

The laptop has two M.2 slots. Install the 256 GB drive in the primary slot for the Windows 10 Pro boot drive; the 1 TB drive goes in the secondary slot. Swapping them makes the larger drive the system volume, which is the common error.

What maintenance will the NVIDIA Quadro P3200 6 GB GDDR5 need after heavy CAD use?

The dedicated GPU is soldered and cannot be replaced. Maintenance is limited to clearing dust from the dual-fan thermal vents and replacing thermal paste on the heatsink if temperatures rise above spec.

At what point does the i7-8750H 2.20 GHz base clock throttle during a long render?

Under sustained multi-core load the six-core processor drops from its 4.10 GHz turbo toward the 2.20 GHz base once the cooling system reaches its thermal limit, typically after several minutes of full utilisation.
