6TB portable USB drive

The WD My Passport WDBR9S0060BRD-WESN is a 6TB portable external hard drive with a slim red enclosure. It connects via a SuperSpeed USB-A cable using the USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface, which is also compatible with USB 2.0 ports. The drive draws power directly from the USB connection so no external adapter is required. Included software provides automatic backup scheduling and 256-bit AES hardware encryption with password protection.

For backups and file transport, not for running apps

This drive suits users who need large-capacity portable storage for photos, videos, documents and system backups while travelling or working across Windows 10+, ChromeOS and macOS 11+ (with the downloadable NTFS driver and reformat). It is not suited for buyers who want an internal drive, a desktop-class drive with a separate power supply, or a drive formatted out of the box for macOS without reformatting. It also does not meet the needs of users who require a ruggedised enclosure with IP-rated water or dust resistance.

USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface decides host speed

The single specification that determines whether this is the right part is the USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps) interface. It sets the maximum data transfer rate between the drive and the host computer, and it dictates compatibility with the USB-A ports on your laptop, desktop or hub. If your workflow requires a faster interface such as USB 3.2 Gen 2 or USB4, this model will not deliver that throughput.

Questions about this item

How hot or noisy does the 6TB My Passport get when it runs all day?

The slim enclosure has no fan and relies on passive cooling, so it stays silent; surface temperature rises slightly during sustained transfers but remains comfortable to touch.

Which port and cable must my laptop already have for the SuperSpeed USB-A cable to work at 5Gbps?

Your computer needs a USB 3.2 Gen 1 or USB 3.0 Type-A port; the drive is also USB 2.0 compatible but will run at the slower speed on older ports.

Will the drive work straight away with a Windows 10 PC and a Mac running macOS 11 without reformatting?

Windows 10 and later recognise it instantly; on macOS 11+ you must install the downloadable NTFS driver and reformat before you can read and write.
