What a 75 ohm video signal needs from a cable

BNC is a connector style, not a signal standard. Video, CCTV and SDI use 75 ohm cable and connectors, while 50 ohm BNC is for radio and test gear, and mixing them degrades the signal. RG59 is the usual thin coax for patch leads and short camera runs. Thicker RG6 loses less over distance. Look at the shielding: double-shielded or braided cable resists interference better. For HD formats such as SDI, choose cable and connectors rated for the data rate, since poor ones fail at higher speeds.

Crimp, compression or twist-on for your own runs?

Many listings here are loose connectors in multi-packs for building cable runs. Crimp and compression types need the matching tool and the correct size for the cable, such as RG59, and compression fittings give the most reliable grip and weather seal. Twist-on connectors are quick but less dependable. Camera systems often use combined video and power leads, so check whether you need separate BNC and DC power ends. A BNC to VGA lead with five BNC plugs, RGBHV, serves professional monitors and is not an everyday PC cable.

Questions about BNC Cables and CCTV Video Cables

Is BNC the same as the F-type coax connector?
No. BNC uses a quarter-turn bayonet lock and is common on CCTV, SDI and test gear, while F-type screws on and is used for TV and satellite. Both can use 75 ohm coax, but the connectors do not mate, and you need an adapter to join them.
How long can a BNC video cable run?
It depends on the cable and the signal. Thicker RG6 carries further than RG59, and HD signals such as SDI have shorter limits than analog video. Check the maximum length for your camera or recorder format, and use quality cable and well-made connectors.
What is a 5-BNC to VGA cable for?
It carries the red, green, blue, horizontal sync and vertical sync signals on separate lines, which some professional monitors, projectors and older workstations use for a clean analog picture. Check that your display has matching BNC inputs before choosing one.
