TV coax and antenna coax are not the same

Coax cables come in two impedance families. TV, satellite and cable internet use 75 ohm cable with F-type connectors, normally RG6 for its lower loss, with RG59 for short or older runs. CB radio and many antennas use 50 ohm cable with PL-259 plugs, and Wi-Fi antennas use small RF connectors. Swapping one for the other causes signal loss and mismatches, so choose by the equipment's stated impedance. Shielding counts too: dual, tri and quad-shield RG6 resist interference better, which matters near power wiring.

Connector gender, length and the fittings at each end

Check the connector at each end, F-type, PL-259, BNC or a small RP-SMA or U.FL plug, and its gender, since male and female ends must pair with the socket on the gear. A female-to-female F-type coupler joins two cables, and an in-line coupler adds a small loss. Reverse-polarity RP-SMA looks like SMA but has swapped center contact, so the two do not mate. Length adds loss, especially at satellite frequencies, so use no more than you need. Compression F connectors keep a tighter, weather-resistant seal than twist-on ones.

Questions about Coax Cables for TV, Satellite and Antennas

Is RG6 better than RG59 for TV and satellite?
For most TV, cable and satellite runs, yes. RG6 is thicker with lower signal loss, so it handles longer runs and higher frequencies. RG59 is fine for short video leads or older systems. Use the type your equipment or installer specifies.
Can I use a TV coax cable for a CB or Wi-Fi antenna?
Usually not. TV coax is 75 ohm while CB radios and most antennas expect 50 ohm, and the connectors differ. Mismatched impedance reduces power transfer and can raise the standing wave ratio. Use cable and connectors specified for the antenna.
How do I attach a coax cable to a TV or satellite receiver?
Screw the F-type connector onto the socket finger-tight, and add a small extra turn only if needed. Over-tightening can damage threads, while a loose connector lets in noise and moisture. Use a weather boot or sealing sleeve for outdoor connections.
