What you need to measure, and how the signal comes out

Start with the quantity: distance, temperature, current, light, motion or object detection. Then check the output, since it decides what the sensor connects to. Analog voltage sensors feed a microcontroller's analog input, digital sensors speak I2C or SPI, and many hobby modules simply toggle a pin. Industrial sensors often use 10 to 30 V DC supplies with transistor outputs, typically NPN or PNP, and the controller input must match that type. Check supply voltage, range, response time and accuracy in the specification.

Hobby modules such as ultrasonic distance boards based on the HC-SR04 run at 5 V and measure from a couple of centimeters to about four meters. They need level shifting for 3.3 V boards. Photoelectric and vision sensors for factory lines are built for continuous operation, and their cables are specific to each model.

Maker module, industrial sensor or boat transducer

The three groups are not interchangeable. A maker module is easy to swap and designed for breadboards. An industrial sensor, such as a photoelectric switch or a vision sensor, has a rugged housing, fixed cable connectors and a model-specific cable. A sonar transducer for a boat measures depth or fish with sound, and listings give operating frequencies in kHz such as 77, 200 or 455, plus mount types like transom. A transducer must match your fish finder's connector and supported frequencies.

Questions about Sensors, Transducers and Thermometers

Can I power an HC-SR04 from 3.3 V?

It is specified for 5 V and may behave unreliably below that. Its echo output is also 5 V, which can damage a 3.3 V input, so use a level shifter or a 3.3 V-capable version.

What do NPN and PNP outputs mean on an industrial sensor?

They describe which side the output switches. NPN outputs switch to ground, PNP outputs switch to the positive supply. Your controller's input must be wired for the matching type, so check it before installing.

Will any transducer work with my fish finder?

No. The connector layout, supported frequencies and power rating must match your unit. Brands often use different plugs, so check the transducer's listed compatibility and the connector pin count.
