Reading 2.1, 3.1.2 and 5.1.2 before you compare soundbars

Soundbar codes list speakers in three groups. The first number counts front and surround channels, the second counts subwoofers, and an optional third counts upward-firing height channels used for ceiling-reflected effects. A 2.0 bar is a slim upgrade over TV speakers, 2.1 adds a bass unit, and 3.1.2 adds a dedicated center channel for dialogue plus height effects. Systems such as 5.1.2 often come with rear speakers you place behind the sofa, and 11.1.4 setups only make sense in a large, fairly flat-ceilinged room.

The Sales unit field matters here. Some listings are a single bar, some a bar with a subwoofer, and some are pairs of rear speakers or standalone subwoofers that belong to a system you must already own. Add-on rear speakers are usually tied to the maker and model of the bar. Read the title for the words with subwoofer or system before assuming the box contains everything in the picture.

Which cable to use between the TV and the bar

Use HDMI with ARC or eARC when both devices offer it: one cable carries TV sound, and the TV remote usually controls the volume. Optical works on older sets but carries compressed 5.1 at most, so it cannot deliver Dolby Atmos or lossless surround formats. Connection lists such as HDMI, USB-C, optical and RCA tell you what the bar accepts, while Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are mainly for streaming music. Also leave room: a tall bar can block the TV's infrared sensor or screen bottom.

Questions about Soundbars: Channel Codes, Subs and Connections

Do I need a separate subwoofer with a soundbar?
Slim 2.0 and 3.0 bars have no bass unit, so low frequencies stay limited. Codes ending in .1 include a subwoofer, either wireless or built in. If you live in an apartment, a wireless sub with adjustable level is easier to keep from annoying neighbors.
What do the height channels in 5.1.2 do?
They are usually upward-firing drivers that bounce sound off the ceiling to suggest overhead effects in Atmos-style soundtracks. They work best under a flat ceiling of ordinary height and need content mixed for them; plain stereo programs gain little from them.
Will a soundbar work with my older TV?
Usually, if the TV has an optical or HDMI ARC output, or even only headphone or RCA audio output. Check the bar's input list against those ports. HDMI is simplest because one cable also lets the TV remote adjust volume.
