Battery, solar, plug-in or low-voltage?

Accent lights run from several sources. Battery lights need no wiring but need new cells or charging, and run times drop at full brightness. Solar models charge outdoors and suit patios, but they only work where the panel sees sun. Plug-in and low-voltage products, such as 5 V USB or 12 V strips, give steady output. Match the power supply voltage to the strip or lamp, and check the controller, usually an IR remote, a wall switch or an app.

Effects, strip length and specialty bulbs

Accent lighting is judged by effect rather than brightness. A 200 lumen solar accent light is a glow; a nightlight is a few lumens. For LED strips, the number of LEDs per meter and a color mode such as RGB, RGBIC or white decide the look, and RGBIC strips can show several colors at once. Strips can be cut only at marked points, and long runs need power injection to avoid dimming at the far end. Specialty bulbs, such as aquarium LEDs, are rated by watts and color, so match the base and the fixture's limit.

Questions about Decorative Accent Lights and LED Mood Lighting

Why does the far end of my LED strip look dimmer?
Voltage drops along a long strip, especially at 5 V and 12 V, so the end receives less power and appears dimmer or a different color. Feed power at both ends or at points along the run, keep each run within the strip's stated maximum, or use a 24 V strip for long runs.
Can I cut an LED strip to length?
Yes, but only at the marked cut lines, usually every few LEDs, shown by a scissors icon. Cutting elsewhere breaks the circuit. Rejoin or extend with the right connectors, and keep the pieces on the same voltage and controller type.
Are solar accent lights bright enough to read by?
Usually not. They are meant for a glow or for marking a path, and many give tens to a couple of hundred lumens. They also dim as the battery drains in winter. For reading, choose a dedicated lamp with a stated output in lumens.
