Product identity

The Lenovo ThinkPad T490 is a 14.0-inch laptop powered by an 8th Gen Intel Core i5-8265U quad-core processor with a base frequency of 1.60GHz and turbo up to 4.1GHz. It ships with 16GB of DDR4 memory, a 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD, and Windows 10 Pro 64-bit pre-installed.

Who this suits and who it does not

This configuration suits office workers, students, and mobile professionals who need a lightweight business laptop with a fingerprint reader, 720p webcam, and Thunderbolt 3 connectivity. Buyers who want a higher-resolution display, discrete graphics, or more than 256GB of internal storage should look elsewhere.

Deciding specification

The 1366 x 768 HD panel is the specification that determines suitability; it delivers a basic 14.0-inch workspace at 60Hz but lacks the pixel density of Full HD or higher screens for detailed content work.

Questions about this item

Will the 16 GB DDR4 memory (8 GB onboard + 8 GB SODIMM) need to be replaced or upgraded later?

The 8 GB SODIMM slot can accept another DDR4 module, but the 8 GB onboard cannot be removed. Total capacity depends on the slot limit.

What limit appears first when the Core i5-8265U runs at 4.1 GHz turbo for long periods?

The 50 Wh battery will drain quickly under sustained turbo loads, so the power supply becomes the practical limit.

How loud or hot does the 14.0" HD laptop get when the 65 W adapter powers it all day?

The 3-cell 50 Wh battery and 65 W supply mean the system manages heat for typical office work; fan noise rises only under heavy CPU load.
