Male to male, extension or Y-splitter?

A male-to-male cable links a source to a speaker or car stereo, with a plug on each end. A male-to-female cable is an extension, lengthening a headphone lead. A Y-splitter divides one output: with two sockets it lets two sets of headphones share a jack, and with two RCA plugs it feeds a stereo amplifier. Right-angle plugs keep the cable flat against a phone or wall. Check for the right number of rings on the plug when you need a microphone line.

Length, shielding and plug size decide the sound

Analog audio is forgiving over short runs but picks up hum and interference on long ones, so use the shortest length that reaches and keep audio cables away from power cords. Decent shielding and a solid plug-to-cable joint matter more than marketing about oxygen-free copper. Plating such as nickel or gold resists oxidation. 3.5 mm is the standard headphone size, while 2.5 mm plugs appear on some older phones and headsets and will not fit a 3.5 mm jack, so match the plug size to the socket.

Questions about 3.5 mm Aux Audio Cables and 2.5 mm Stereo Cables

Can I use a 3.5 mm aux cable to connect my phone to a car stereo?
Yes, if the stereo has an aux input. Use a male-to-male stereo cable, keep the phone volume fairly high and adjust the stereo's own volume control. If your phone has only USB-C, add a USB-C to 3.5 mm adapter first.
Why is there hum or buzzing on my aux connection?
Hum usually comes from a ground loop or interference from power cables. Try a shorter, better-shielded cable, move it away from power leads, and plug both devices into the same outlet. A ground-loop isolator is a further fix in car and home setups.
Can one aux cable connect two pairs of headphones?
Use a Y-splitter with one plug and two sockets, which sends the same signal to both. Volume is shared, and two sets in parallel place a heavier load on the output, so very quiet sources may sound weaker.
