14-inch FHD Touchscreen Ultrabook

This Lenovo ThinkPad T480 is a 14.0-inch Full HD touchscreen laptop built for professionals who need a portable Windows 10 Pro machine. It ships new with an 8th-generation Intel Core i5-8250U quad-core processor running at 1.6 GHz and 16 GB of DDR4 memory. The 1 TB SSD provides ample space for the operating system, applications and large project files. Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 handles everyday visual tasks.

Connectivity and expansion

The chassis includes three USB 3.1 ports, one USB-C port, an HDMI output and a Gigabit Ethernet jack for wired networks. Wireless connectivity comes from Intel dual-band Wi-Fi with Bluetooth 4.1. An SD or MicroSD card reader and a fingerprint reader are optional features and may not be present on every unit. There is no optical drive, so software must be installed via USB or network. The included OEM AC adapter is rated at either 45 W or 65 W.

Storage capacity and performance headroom

The 1 TB solid-state drive offers generous room for documents, media and virtual machines without relying on external storage. The 16 GB DDR4 configuration supports smooth multitasking across office suites, web browsers and video-conferencing apps. Integrated graphics and the 15 W processor are not suited to sustained 3D rendering, modern gaming or heavy GPU compute workloads. Buyers who need discrete graphics performance or more than 16 GB of memory should consider a different platform.

Questions about this item

Will the i5-8250U throttle under a long compile job?

The quad-core i5-8250U runs at a 1.6 GHz base clock with a 6 MB L2 cache; sustained heavy loads will hit the thermal ceiling of the ultrabook chassis and reduce boost clocks.

How loud and hot does the T480 get when left on all day?

The 14.0" FHD IPS touchscreen model weighs 3.6 lbs and measures .78" thick; the 45 W or 65 W AC adapter supplies power while the integrated UHD 620 graphics keep heat output modest during typical office workloads.

What cables or docks do I need to drive two external monitors?

The unit provides one HDMI port and one USB-C 3.1 port; a USB-C to DisplayPort cable or a compatible dock is required for the second display.
