ThinkPad T480/T490 14" FHD i7-8550U

This 14.0-inch ultrabook ships new with Windows 10 Pro or Windows 11 Pro preinstalled. An 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8550U quad-core processor running at 1.8 GHz with 8 MB L2 cache drives the system. Integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620 handles the 1920 x 1080 IPS non-touch display. 16 GB of DDR4 memory and a 1 TB SSD complete the core configuration.

Suits mobile professionals needing a quad-core

The T480 or T490 chassis delivers a quad-core i7, 16 GB RAM and 1 TB solid-state storage in a 14-inch form factor. Connectivity includes 3 x USB 3.1 ports, 1 x USB-C port, HDMI, RJ-45 Ethernet, Intel dual-band wireless and Bluetooth 4.1. A 720p webcam and fingerprint reader may be present depending on the specific unit. Buyers who require a touchscreen or a larger display should consider other models.

Single specification: 1 TB SSD

Storage capacity is the decisive figure for this listing. The drive provides one terabyte of solid-state space for the operating system, applications and data. No mechanical hard drive is fitted. If the workload demands more than 1 TB of internal capacity, this unit will not meet the requirement.

Questions about this item

What does the USB 3.1 interface cap at in practice?

The three USB 3.1 ports each run at up to 10 Gbps, so large file transfers hit the bus limit before the drive does.

What physical space does the 14.0" chassis need on a desk?

Either 13.25 x 9.15 x .78 in or 12.7 x 8.5 x .7 in depending on whether the unit is a T480 or T490.

How is the DDR4 memory installed, and what step do people miss?

The 16 GB ships soldered; if you add a module later, seat it fully until the clips click or the system will not POST.
