Extender over network cable, or in-line booster?

Most long-distance extenders come as a transmitter and a receiver joined by one network cable, which turns an HDMI or USB link into a run of tens of meters; listed limits of 50 to 100 m are common. These are usually point-to-point and are not network devices, so do not plug them into a switch unless the listing says it supports network distribution. A signal booster instead restores an HDMI signal along a normal cable to reach beyond the usual cable limits. Choose by distance, signal type and the cable you can pull.

Distance depends on resolution

The maximum distance on the box is a best case. It usually applies at 1080p over good solid-copper Cat6 and shrinks at 4K or with poor cable, patch panels or loose terminations. Check whether the receiver needs its own power supply or takes power over the cable, and whether it passes remote-control signals. USB extenders state the USB version they support, and a USB 2.0 unit will not run a USB 3.0 drive at full speed. PCIe riser extenders are a different part, changing only where a card sits in a case.

Questions about Signal Extenders and Boosters for HDMI and USB

How far can an HDMI cable run without an extender?
Passive HDMI cables stay reliable for a few meters at 4K 60 Hz and considerably farther at 1080p. Beyond that, use an active cable, a booster, or a transmitter-and-receiver extender over network cable, and check its listed distance for your resolution.
Will a USB extender work with a webcam or an external drive?
It depends on the USB version and power. A USB 2.0 extender suits webcams, keyboards and mice, but storage or capture devices that need USB 3.0 speeds will not run properly, and bus-powered devices may need a powered hub at the far end.
Why does my extended picture sparkle or drop out?
Sparkles and dropouts usually mean the signal is marginal. Shorten the run, use good-quality Cat6 cable throughout, avoid running beside power cables, and check that the extender supports your resolution. Dropping the output to 1080p often confirms the cause.
