Secure Portable Storage

The iStorage diskAshur2 is a 500GB portable hard drive designed for users who need hardware-encrypted storage without installing software. It authenticates via an onboard keypad using a 7-15 digit PIN before the drive becomes visible to the operating system. The drive suits professionals handling sensitive data who require cross-platform compatibility with Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, Chrome and embedded systems. It is not suited for buyers who need solid-state speeds or capacities beyond 500GB.

Thermals and Power

The 2.5-inch form factor draws power directly from the USB 3.1 connection, eliminating the need for an external power adapter. With no active cooling components, the drive runs silently during operation. The IP56 certified enclosure provides dust and splash resistance, protecting the internal mechanics in challenging environments. Real-time AES-XTS 256-bit encryption processes data without noticeable performance overhead on the host system.

Build and Connectivity

The ruggedised chassis measures 0.75 by 4.88 by 3.31 inches and weighs 0.48 lb, fitting easily into the supplied protective carry case. A USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface delivers up to 160MB/s read and 143MB/s write speeds while remaining backwards compatible with older ports. The integrated keypad and microprocessor are Common Criteria EAL5+ ready, employing physical anti-tamper mechanisms that trigger a deadlock state under automated attack attempts.

Questions about this item

How do I connect the USB 3.1 drive to my laptop and what step do people forget?

Plug the USB 3.1 cable into any USB port, then enter your 7-15 digit PIN on the built-in keypad before the drive appears; the step people skip is typing the PIN first.

What part will need replacement first on the IP56 rated enclosure?

The internal 2.5" mechanical hard drive is the only moving component and will wear out before the sealed, dust and splashproof case or the keypad.

At what speed does the 500GB drive hit its sustained write limit?

Sequential writes level off at 143MB/s, so long transfers cannot exceed that throughput regardless of the USB 3.2 interface.
