Secure portable drive for regulated data

The iStorage diskAshur2 is a 2TB portable hard drive that protects data with a hardware PIN and real-time AES 256-bit XTS encryption. It suits professionals who must meet GDPR, CCPA or HIPAA requirements and need a rugged, software-free device that works on any system with a USB port.

USB 3.1 Gen 1 limits practical throughput

The drive connects through a USB 3.1 interface and delivers up to 160MB/s read and 143MB/s write speeds. Actual transfer rates will not exceed the 5Gbps signalling ceiling of this standard, so sustained performance on large files is capped by the bus rather than the internal mechanism.

Verify USB-A power and port availability

The unit draws power from the host USB port and requires no external adapter, so confirm your device supplies sufficient current for a 2.5-inch mechanical drive. Its IP56 rating protects against dust and water jets, but the 0.75 by 4.88 by 3.31 inch enclosure and 0.48 lb weight mean it needs physical space in a bag or on a desk.

Questions about this item

Which capacity should I choose if I need the 2TB model?

The product listed is the 2TB version, identified by model IS-DA2-256-2000-R, so there is no other capacity to select for this specific item.

What do the 160MB/s read and 143MB/s write speeds mean when I connect the drive?

Those figures are the maximum sequential transfer rates over USB 3.1; actual throughput will vary with the host controller, cable quality, file sizes and system workload.

What does the USB 3.1 interface cap at in practice?

The drive uses a USB 3.1 Gen 1 connection (5 Gbps), and the manufacturer rates it at up to 160MB/s read and 143MB/s write, which is the practical ceiling for this unit.
